Introducing the NHS Procurement and Commercial Digital Academy

The NHS Procurement and Commercial Digital Academy will support those staff members who want to further their skills and knowledge in data and analytics. Offering multiple entry points and qualifications, the academy fits around an individual and organisation's specific digital needs. The programmes are focused on supporting you to take the new digital and data skills you are learning, as part of the academy, and applying these skills directly to your specific role. So you can drive impact for your organisation and the NHS broadly.

NHS England’s Central Commercial Function is working with Multiverse to deliver a digital academy to upskill and reskill the NHS commercial and procurement workforce with critical digital skills. Multiverse is the number one provider in the UK for embedding data as a distributed capability rather than a centralised function and their courses have achieved an Ofsted rating of “Outstanding” in all categories.

Why is the Central Commercial Function launching a digital academy

  • A single approach to training and development for all NHS procurement and commercial staff in data and analytical skills
  • A tailored academy focussed on providing specific digital skill sets to procurement and commercial staff
  • Increased productivity and efficiency in work (up to 30% of staff time)
  • Builds inhouse data analytics capability to improve insight into suppliers and KPI’s
  • Better ability to interpret data will mean NHS procurement nationally can make better informed decisions and drive better value for the NHS
  • Helps facilitate collaboration across commercial teams to unlock opportunities for the NHS. Create a consistent accredited learning offering
  • Supports a career pathway that develops future proof knowledge.
  • Prepares the workforce for greater responsibilities and supports succession planning

Perspectives from leadership

Data and analytical capability within our teams is essential to the success of any commercial function, so I am delighted that we’re upskilling our community and developing these skills. I look forward to seeing the hugely positive impact that the academy will have on our workforce.

Apprentice Spotlights

Data Fellowship Apprentice (Procurement and Contracts Manager)

"A Procurement & Contracts Manager was able to leverage data visualisation for predictive insights. They were able to uncover new methods of identifying future forecast risks to the organisation using a new dashboard that brought together data from disparate sources. This meant they were able to assess how costs might be impacted in the short to medium term ahead of time, so they can now take action against any increases."

"The apprenticeship has given me more confidence in my abilities, encouraged me to focus on my development, and supported me in enabling my team to take on more of the transactional elements of my role, freeing me up to work on more transformational elements.”

Data Literacy Apprentice (Head of Finance)

A Head of Finance was able to better present analysis to inform the reduction of tolerance thresholds in the invoice matching process meaning less back and forth with the Accounts Payable Team. The analysis allowed the organisation to decide on the most efficient process while mitigating material financial risk. Based on the modelling, there is an estimated cost saving of £4.5million over the year.

The importance of Data in Procurement & Commercial

Data and analytical skills in NHS procurement and commercial are no longer a nice to have but a vital component in delivering the role. Much focus in recent years has been on investing in central systems and technology, and in order to get the most out of these investments, developing internal talent, who already have incredible insight and understanding of our data is key to helping the NHS deliver upon its objectives.

By developing talent, we help support staff on their career pathways to meet their aspirations; learning is shared among peers, and the whole procurement community benefits.
