Maths and English: Your Level 2 Functional Skills qualification
It is a government requirement that you hold a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths in order to complete an apprenticeship.

Overview of Functional Skills
Share your Level 2 qualification in English and Maths with us or pass our Maths and English Initial Assessments and then sit Functional skills while on your apprenticeship.
You’ll need to prove that you have the right qualifications if you’d like to get onto a Multiverse programme. This is required of us by the government as our apprenticeships are paid for by Levy funding.
Required Qualifications
A Level 2 qualification in English and Maths is required to do an apprenticeship. This is equivalent to a GCSE at grade C/4 or above.
We also accept any qualifications (both UK and international) that are equivalent to the above. Please note that for English, we are only able to accept qualifications where English was studied as a first language (equivalent to English studied in the UK).
We cannot accept ESOL, TOEFL or other English as a Foreign Language qualifications.
Degrees cannot be considered as proof of English & Maths unless they are specifically in the subject (e.g. BSc Maths / BA English). For example, a BEng in Mechanical Engineering would not meet the requirements for Maths.
Maths and English Certificates
Learn more about uploading your certificates as part of your application.

Uploading Your Certificates
Upload copies of your Maths and English certificates to confirm that you have the required qualifications to complete an apprenticeship. If you don’t have your qualifications to hand, you have six weeks from the start date of your programme to provide these.
Please visit our support hub for information on how to submit your certificates
We can accept:
- Certificates or Certified Statements of Results
- Provisional results slips from exam boards (please note that some exam boards charge for this service)
- A report produced by your School’s Information Management System (SIMS) or Candidate Management Information System (CMIS).
Note that this needs to be stamped by your School/College/Provider, and signed by the Examinations Office or equivalent. It will also need to confirm your full name, full qualification details (including organisation name and/or qualification number), the grade awarded, and date of achievement.
We cannot accept simple headed letters from Schools.
The Maths and English Initial Assessments
Learn more about the Maths and English Initial Assessments you’ll have to take as part of your apprentice application.
Completing Your Maths and English Initial Assessments
The application includes Maths and English initial assessments that all applicants must complete. These are designed to determine your eligibility for an apprenticeship. Take as long as you want to complete the assessments and feel free to use any tools such as a calculator or dictionary. Note that if you don't pass, you cannot retake the assessments for the current application period. Review the table to the right to understand if you’re eligible to complete an apprenticeship.

Your Maths and English Initial Assessments Results
Once you’ve taken the Maths and English Initial Assessments our team will review your responses and share your results with our Admission teams. If you’ve passed but don’t have the necessary Maths and English qualifications - don’t worry! You’ll still be able to become an apprentice as long as you sit Functional Skills alongside your apprenticeship. This is a government requirement to ensure you can receive your credentials at the end of the programme.
Please note that you will only be notified of your results if you do not have the required Maths/English certs and/or are required to sit Functional skills.
